"Greatest" ring returned

Aug 24, 2011
Welcome to my new blog. I spend my work days engulfed in football. Among other things, I have to keep a constant pulse on the football world so we can keep the world’s largest collection on pro football up-to-date. I’m going to use this space to regularly share news about our Hall of Famers. Consider it your “one-stop” shopping for info on the NFL’s greatest legends.

The 1958 NFL Championship is dubbed the “Greatest Game Ever Played” by many football historians. The NFL classic marked the first time in league history that a championship game was decided in sudden death. The Baltimore Colts rallied from behind and defeated the New York Giants 23-17. The game featured 17 future Pro Football Hall of Famers.

Today one of those Hall of Famers, the Colts’ defensive tackle Art Donovan, was reunited with his world championship ring 53 years after the game was played. This reunion is remarkable considering the ring was returned to Donovan 34 years after it was stolen during a trip abroad in 1977.

No, this photo is not one of Art Donovan  (#70 in the middle of the pile) looking for his
lost ring but it is a shot of the '58 Championship from our archives.

Police received a tip that the ring was being sold on Craigslist for $20,000. The championship ring which has Donovan’s name and his number 70 engraved on it was removed from the site, seized and returned to him.

"It's unbelievable. It's just beautiful. There's not a ding, not a scratch on it," Donovan’s daughter Debbie described in an interview with the Baltimore Sun.
