Hall of Famers coming to Canton

07/19/2010

Bob Lilly during his Enshrinement.

Thirty years ago, the man they called "Mr. Cowboy," Bob Lilly stood on the front steps of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and delivered his enshrinement speech. This August he'll be on the grand enshrinement stage inside Pro Football Hall of Fame Field at Fawcett Stadium.

Lilly is one of more than 80 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame who are expected to return for August's Enshrinement Festival. In what has become one of the great traditions in sports, these football legends come back to Canton each summer to welcome the newest class of enshrinees.

The Class of 2010 – Russ Grimm, Rickey Jackson, Dick LeBeau, Floyd Little, John Randle, Jerry Rice, and Emmitt Smith – will be formally enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. ET.

Lilly, who will travel to Canton with his wife Ann, celebrates the 30th anniversary of his induction in 1980. "I've been thinking about that this year. I realize how old I am and I can't believe it. It seems like it was only yesterday."

Tickets remain for the enshrinement ceremony. The Enshrinement will also be broadcast live by the NFL Network and ESPN.

As Trish kindly pointed out, if you're patient enough you can get free autos... outside the hotel is a great place to hang out, you'll see other autograph hunters there. It'****and miss, you need to be there at the right time, but if you wait long enough you're guaranteed to get a HOFer (or two) to sign for you. You'll often find other former and current players, coaches, owners, etc. walking around Canton, you'll catch a few of them if you hang around the HOF museum, some of them go in and out, once again a 'right place right time' kind of thing. Other than that there is always a few guys signing at the Westfield Belden Village Mall (located @ 4230 Belden Village Mall). These also run about $20 per autograph.

HOF Fan Tim - address for the Holiday Inn is 4520 Everhard NW in North Canton, OH. I go to Canton each year for the HOF ceremony and am familiar with all of the auto signings, they hold them at the Holiday Inn each year (a few different promoters), and the signings outside of the Hall of Fame museum are run by Mounted Memories... you can see the entire list of who will be signing at their website, times & prices, etc. Keep in mind neither of these sessions are free, the MM ones are quite pricey (ranging from $50 to $299)... the Holiday Inn signings are always cheaper, $30 for Otto and the other guys are probably around the same price.

Best bet to get an autograph is to stand outside the McKinley Grand downtown Wednesday through Sunday. They stop and sign for people when they have time. Most don't require anything in return, some do the one card to them for one autograph. But from my experiences non charge money at the hotel. Just have to be patient and wait for them to come and go, but it's fun. You get to meet many fans. It's a great time.
