KEVIN GREENE TO RECEIVE HALL OF FAME RING OF EXCELLENCE

The Pro Football Hall of Fame and Kay® Jewelers, the Official Jewelry Store of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, will honor Class of 2016 enshrinee KEVIN GREENE in Pittsburgh on Sunday night. The special presentation takes place at halftime of the Steelers Week 4 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs at Heinz Field.

Greene will become the second member of the Class of 2016 to receive his Ring of Excellence this season when the Hall’s President David Baker presents it on Sunday. The Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence is one of three iconic symbols that represent the elite status of being a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Greene received his Hall of Fame Gold Jacket on Thursday night of Enshrinement Week in Canton, and unveiled his Bronzed Bust during the Enshrinement Ceremony two days later. All three symbols will be displayed during the Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence presentation. Greene will wear his Hall of Fame Gold Jacket and his Bronzed Bust will be temporarily removed from the Hall of Fame and shipped to Pittsburgh for the ceremony.

Greene is one of 27 Hall of Famers who spent all or a portion of their career with the Steelers franchise to be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is also the 26th linebacker to find a permanent home in Canton.

Greene reflected during his Enshrinement speech in August about his years with the Steelers. “So in my ninth year, I find myself in the right place at the right time in the football universe. I find myself in ‘Blitzburgh.’ I would never quite experience anything like being a Pittsburgh Steeler, playing for Mr. Rooney and the Steeler organization that had such a rich history … It was awesome to be a part of that, playing in front of the ‘Steeler Nation’ and feeding off that energy from those fans. I believed in my heart that I was unblockable, and it was a phenomenal experience.”

Greene’s NFL career began when the Los Angeles Rams drafted him out of Auburn in the the fifth round (113th overall) of the 1985 NFL Draft. Greene played 15 seasons and developed into one of the most punishing pass rushers in league history. He spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Rams before joining the Steelers where he played from 1993-95. Greene also spent time with the Carolina Panthers (1996, 1998-99) and the San Francisco 49ers (1997). Greene had double-digit sack totals ten times, a mark that placed him second in the record book at the time. He led the league in sacks twice and amassed 160 sacks in his career which ranked third all-time when he retired. A five-time Pro Bowl pick, Greene was also selected first-team All-Pro three times and was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s.

In addition to Greene being honored at Sunday’s game, his wife Tara will sing the National Anthem alongside the rock band, Styx who will also perform the Steelers’ anthem “Renegade” during the halftime tribute. Tara Greene also sang the National Anthem at the Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony in Canton on August 6.
