Fit to be tied

For just the 18th time since the National Football League instituted overtime for regular season games in 1974, a game has ended in a tie. The San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams battled for 75 minutes during their Week 10 game and neither walked away with a victory.

The 24-24 tie was the first undecided game since the NFL recently instituted new overtime rules that allows for both teams to possess the football in the sudden death period. Sunday’s game marked the second overtime tie for both the 49ers and Rams since ’74. The Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers hold the distinction as the teams with the most ties (4) since the overtime rule was instituted.

The very first game under the sudden death overtime rules ended with an even score as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos tied 35-35 on Sept. 22, 1974.  Here’s a rundown of all tie games since overtime was added to regular season games.
