Airing it out

The Houston Texans became the first team ever to score twice in overtime. The Texans kicked a field goal early in the extra quarter of a game on Nov. 18, 2012 but changes to the sudden death rule gave the Jacksonville Jaguars the opportunity to knot the game with a field goal. The battle was finally ended when Houston’s Matt Schaub hooked up with receiver Andre Johnson on a 48-yard TD pass play with 2:01 left in the game.

That scoring strike put the finishing touches on a memorable day for Schaub who threw for 527 yards. The total not only bested the franchise mark he owned but tied for the second most passing yards ever in a NFL game.

Here is a look at the quarterbacks who own the single-game passing records for each of the 32 NFL teams. Six of the team marks have been set in the past two seasons while only four team records were set prior to the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

Chicago's Johnny Lujack set the then NFL record by throwing for 468 yards on Dec. 11, 1949. He had 6 TD passes to help the Bears to a 52-21 victory over the crosstown rival Cardinals in the season finale. Lujack's mark remains a Bears record and has lasted the longest of any of the team highs. Joe Namath needed just 15 completions to rack up a New York Jets record 496 yards in a shootout against Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts on Sept. 24, 1972. The two Hall of Fame passers combined for a then-record 872 yards that day. Namath threw 6 TDs including four bombs (65, 67, 79, and 80- yard strikes).

Boomer Esiason is the only quarterback to own the single-game passing record for two teams.
