First Overall Pick in the NFL Draft:
Did you know?
In 1995, the NFL awarded its two new expansion teams – the Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars – an extra draft pick in each round. The Panthers with the help of a coin flip earned the draft's first overall pick. They traded down with the Cincinnati Bengals and as a result went into their first draft as owners of four of the first 36 draft picks.
Their foundation that included free agent veterans was made stronger with the addition of some fine college talent. Added through first- and second-round picks that year were QB Kerry Collins, DB Tyrone Poole, T Blake Brockermeyer, and DE Shawn King.
"There's definitely going to be extra pressure playing in Carolina, but I think that's what good players become great in - pressure situations. And I'm ready for that," declared the No. 2 pick of the 2002 NFL Draft Julius Peppers.
The North Carolina DE showed no reservations about joining the NFL club that finished just 1-15 in 2001. He helped transform the Panthers back into winners as they captured the NFC South title and earned the franchise's first trip to the Super Bowl by Peppers' second season.
