Cris Carter's memorable '94 season
In 1994, the National Football League celebrated its 75th Anniversary. During the yearlong celebration, much attention was placed on the storied history of a league that got its start in an automobile showroom in Canton, Ohio in 1920.
Meanwhile, on the field, veteran wide receiver Cris Carter of the Minnesota Vikings was meticulously rewriting the record book. By season's end, Carter had shattered the previous record of 112 receptions in a season originally set by Sterling Sharpe of the Green Bay Packers in 1993 and duplicated by the San Francisco 49ers' Jerry Rice a year later. Carter finished the '94 season with 122 catches for 1,256 yards and 7 touchdowns. Following the season, Carter donated his complete uniform (helmet, pants, jersey, and gloves) and a ball to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
One season later, Carter matched his output of 122 catches as he registered a career best 1,371 yards and a league leading 17 touchdowns. However, his record for catches did not last long when the Detroit Lions' Herman Moore surpassed it in 1995. Moore’s mark fell to Marvin Harrison who currently holds the record with his 143 receptions for the Indianapolis Colts during the 2002 season.
