Dolphins looking for first win at Fawcett

1978 – Philadelphia Eagles 17, Miami Dolphins 3

July 29, 1978 – Philadelphia received the opening kickoff and proceeded to drive the ball down the field and kick an 18-yard field goal. The Dolphins finally answered in the second quarter with a field goal of their own when Garo Yepremian connected on a 22-yarder to tie the game at 3-3.

Philadelphia took the lead once again on a 19-yard touchdown pass from John Walton to Vince Papale at the end of the third quarter. The Eagles put the game away 17-3 with a fourth quarter 72-yard punt return touchdown by returner Wally Henry.

2001 – St. Louis Rams 17, Miami Dolphins 10

Aug. 6, 2001 – The Miami Dolphins opened the scoring with a Lamar Smith touchdown run over left guard in the first quarter. The Rams answered on the very next possession as kicker Jeff Wilkins booted a 34-yard field goal to close out the first quarter scoring.

Then late in the second quarter after a 12-play, 59-yard drive that took 7 minutes and 12 seconds, the Rams took their first lead of the day on a 1-yard touchdown plunge by quarterback Joe Germaine. Miami answered with a two-minute drill that concluded with an Olindo Mare 45-yard field goal to tie the game at 10-10 to end the half.

For much of the second half the defenses excelled and the offenses sputtered. But, with their first possession of the fourth quarter, the Rams put together a five-play, 57-yard scoring drive that was aided by a 29-yard pass interference penalty. The Rams capped the drive with a 3-yard TD pass from Marc Bulger to tight end Jeff Robinson. The Rams went on to win 17-10.

2005 – Chicago Bears 27, Miami Dolphins 24

Aug. 8, 2005 – Chicago opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run by Thomas Jones on the third possession of the game after a nine-play, 83-yard drive. Miami cut into Chicago’s 7-0 lead with a second quarter 33-yard field goal by Olindo Mare. Miami then took the lead 10-7 just before halftime on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Gus Frerotte to Bryan Gilmore.

The Dolphins expanded their lead to 17-7 to open the second half with a 10-play, 74-yard scoring drive that ended with Sage Rosenfels connecting with Jason Rader on a touchdown pass. The Bears added three points to the scoreboard with a 22-yard field goal from Nick Novak on the next possession and as the second period came to a close the Dolphins led 17-10.

Chicago proceeded to cut into the deficit in the fourth quarter with a 30-yard field goal from Doug Brien. On the Bears next possession, Kyle Orton’s pass was picked off by Jason Glenn and returned 26 yards for a touchdown. Trailing 24-13, the Bears responded with a 43-yard touchdown bomb from Orton to Carl Ford, closing the gap to 24-20 with just over seven minutes to play.

Chicago then took the lead 27-24 with just under two minutes remaining with a Zack Abron 4-yard touchdown run over left guard. The Dolphins drove the ball down to the Bears 15-yard-line during their two-minute offense. But Miami’s move down the field was thwarted with 51 seconds remaining when the Bears’ Jerrell Pippens intercepted a Brock Berlin pass in the end zone.
