Area Youths Invited to Join in Memorable Event!

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is "looking for a few good quarterbacks," to participate in the newest addition to this year's Hall of Fame enshrinement celebration, the NFL Century's First Play. The new event, sponsored by Mercy Medical Center, is scheduled for Friday, July 28, beginning at 9:45 a.m. The First Play will feature a ceremonial football toss along a 2.7 mile route from the downtown Canton site where the NFL was founded in 1920, to the Hall of Fame's NFL Experience site at Don Scott Field.

"

Jerry Csaki makes young participants cry
We hope to have more than 2,000 young people, ages 8 to 18, participate in this human chain of football fans," stated Hall of Fame Executive Director John Bankert. The football toss will begin at the corner of 2nd Street SW and Cleveland Avenue, where Ralph Hay's Hupmobile auto dealership once stood. It was there that a handful of pro football pioneers met in 1920 to form the National Football League.

Bankert will be joined by and Canton Mayor Dick Watkins and an NFL representative at the ceremonial start of the event, at 9:45 a.m. at the 2nd Street SW location. After brief remarks, the trio will follow the ball along its route from the comfort of the Hall of Fame's 1920 Hupmobile. The ball, upon its arrival to the NFL Experience, will be presented to a Hall of Fame representative. The well-traveled ball will be formally delivered to Bankert at the Hall of Fame Game by the U.S. Navy's Leapfrogs sky diving team who will perform during the pre-game ceremonies.

Individuals ages 8 to 18, or youth groups interested in participating in the NFL Century's First Pass should contact Jerry Csaki at the Pro Football Hall of Fame (456-8207). Registration and signed waivers are required.
