Students getting fit!

More than 1,400 students participated in the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s “Get Fit Hall of Fame Training Camp” at Canton’s historic Fawcett Stadium. The program was created and developed as part of the Hall’s Educational Outreach Program.

In all, 1,441 students, grades kindergarten through eighth, took part in the camp. Individual sessions were offered each day from Monday through Friday. The students, along with 180 teachers and chaperones, represented 19 schools for the annual event.

As he has done in the past, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch took part in the “Get Fit Hall of Fame Training Camp.” He brought 92 kids from his “Best of the Batch” organization on Monday.

The camp was facilitated by Jon Laird, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Education Advisory Panel. He was aided by coaches and players from two area college football teams, Malone University (Monday and Tuesday); and Walsh University (Wednesday-Friday).

Fawcett Stadium is home to the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony and the NFL/Hall of Fame Game. On Saturday, Aug. 6, the Class of 2011 – Richard Dent, Marshall Faulk, Chris Hanburger, Les Richter, Ed Sabol, Deion Sanders, and Shannon Sharpe – will be formally enshrined. The following day, the NFL’s preseason is slated to kick off with the Chicago Bears and St. Louis Rams in the annual preseason classic.
