Tomlinson’s record on display in Canton

Tomlinson ran for a pair of second quarter touchdowns in the contest against the Broncos at INVESCO Field at Mile High Stadium on September 18, 2005. It marked the 14th straight game in which he scored a rushing touchdown to set a new National Football League record. The previous mark was shared by a pair of Washington Redskins runners – John Riggins and George Rogers – in the 1980s.

Tomlinson ran his streak to 18 games before the Philadelphia Eagles kept him out of the end zone during Week 7 action. Tomlinson’s scoring rampage allowed him to tie the long-standing league record held by Hall of Famer Lenny Moore, who also scored a touchdown in 18 straight games from 1963 to 1965.

The jersey is not the first piece of memorabilia from the Chargers running back to be added to the Hall’s collection. The shoes and gloves he wore during San Diego’s 2003 season finale were donated to the museum after Tomlinson became the first player in NFL history to catch 100 passes and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season.

All three items are on display in the Hall’s Pro Football Today exhibition area.

The newest addition to the archives compliments many pieces already in the Hall that are related to the Chargers. A couple of the more notable pieces either on display or preserved in the archives include the jerseys worn by Hall of Famers Dan Fouts and Charlie Joiner. The Fouts jersey is from 1979 and Joiner’s was from the game in 1984 when he became the NFL’s all-time leading receiver.
