McCarthy's Super Bowl wardrobe arrives in Canton

06/03/2011

The jacket, pants, shoes, hat, and head set worn by Mike McCarthy on the sidelines during the Green Bay Packers’ win in Super Bowl XLV arrived at the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Thursday. McCarthy led his team to a thrilling victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Feb. 6, 2011 at Cowboys Stadium in North Texas.

The championship was the 13th for the Packers that include four Super Bowl wins. No team in NFL history has more league titles than the Packers.

“We’re thrilled to receive these mementos from Mike McCarthy,” stated the Hall of Fame’s Vice President – Communications/Exhibits Joe Horrigan. “Having his wardrobe from that specific moment in time really enhances our ability to tell the story of the Packers’ championship season.”

Although not regarded as brash in public McCarthy unleashed a bold move on the night before the Super Bowl. He shocked his players when he had each of them fitted for a Super Bowl ring on the eve of the big game. His motivational ploy worked to perfection as the Packers downed the Steelers 31-25 the next day.

In the five seasons since he was named the 14th head coach of the Packers, McCarthy had compiled a record 53-34-0 and led Green Bay to the playoffs three times.

The artifacts were placed on exhibit in an area leading into the Lamar Hunt Super Bowl Gallery.
