Bart Starr, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 1977, returned to his alma mater Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Ala. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, as he was honored as a "Hometown Hall of Famer™" by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Allstate Insurance Company.

The former Green Bay Packers quarterback and Most Valuable Player of Super Bowls I and II received his "Hometown Hall of Famer™" plaque during a special ceremony in the Sidney Lanier auditorium. The event was attended by more than 200 student-athletes, faculty and staff, Starr's former high school coach, Bill Moseley, and former teammate Richard Fulmer, presented Starr with his historic plaque.

"To bring Bart Starr home to Montgomery and Sidney Lanier, and to be in the presence of so many friends and high school teammates made today's Hometown Hall of Famer™ plaque presentation extraordinarily special," said George Veras, president and CEO of Pro Football Hall of Fame Enterprises.  "That is what this program is all about - reconnecting members of the Hall with their roots while extending the Pro Football Hall of Fame to cities and towns across the country and we're proud to have Montgomery as our newest extension."

The ceremony was emceed by former Sidney Lanier principal Mary George Jester and the student-athletes in attendance had the opportunity to hear from Starr on what it means to "chase excellence" in the same fashion that he was taught by the late Packers head coach Vince Lombardi.

The ceremony also featured speaking roles by Veras and Allstate's Lynn Norris, who detailed the "Hometown Hall of Famer™" program, and was followed by a special reception hosted by Sidney Lanier and its staff.  The plaque honoring Starr and bearing his likeness will be permanently displayed at the school to serve as an inspiration for current and future Sidney Lanier students.

"To be part of a program that brings the prestige and tradition of the Pro Football Hall of Fame to communities like Montgomery is an honor for Allstate, our agents and employees," said Mark LaNeve, Allstate executive vice president, marketing and sales operations.

Starr was a standout quarterback at Sidney Lanier High School from 1949 to 1953 before playing at the collegiate level for University of Alabama. The Green Bay Packers selected Starr in the 17th round of the 1956 NFL draft. He soon became the leader of the Packers’ dynasty team of the 1960s coached by the legendary Vince Lombardi. Starr, noted as a leader as well as a methodical and poised passer, led the Packers to six division, five NFL, and two Super Bowl titles. He was the NFL’s MVP in 1966, won three passing crowns, and was voted to four Pro Bowls. In all, he threw for 24,718 yards and 152 yards in his Hall of Fame career.

"Hometown Hall of Famers™" will next honor the late George Halas, the founder, owner, and coach of the Chicago Bears, on Dec. 6, 2011 at Chicago’s Crane High School.
