Class of 2021 College Spotlight: Alan Faneca at LSU

4/28/2021

In honor of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2021, we’re looking back at the collegiate careers that set the foundation for these Hall of Famers.

Next on the list is Alan Faneca, the longtime Pittsburgh Steelers guard who started his Hall of Fame career at Louisiana State University.

It was no surprise when Faneca chose to attend LSU to play college ball. He was born in New Orleans and attended high school in River Ridge, La., making his move to Baton Rouge almost a certainty.

Faneca was redshirted his first season on campus and took the field for the first time in 1995. He was named a starter his redshirt freshman season and stayed atop the depth chart for the remainder of his collegiate career.

As a sophomore, Faneca was named a second-team All-American and started to get on the country’s radar as a future pro prospect.

Faneca’s junior season in 1997 saw him explode onto the national stage. He was named a consensus first-team All-American, won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy and was a finalist for the Outland Trophy, given to the nation’s top interior lineman.

After starting 36 consecutive games and being lauded as one of the top offensive line talents in the country, Faneca declared for the NFL Draft following his junior season.

1998 NFL Draft

Faneca was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 26th overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft. He spent 10 seasons with the franchise and was named to the Pittsburgh Steelers All-Time Team in 2007.
