Let’s get to know more about the host of the 2019 Gold Jacket Club:
Jerry Rice entered the 1985 NFL Draft as one of the most highly touted offensive players following a historic career at Mississippi Valley State.
Rice broke into the national consciousness after claiming nearly every Division 1-AA receiving record possible in his four collegiate seasons. In his junior year at Mississippi Valley State, Rice led the NCAA with 102 receptions and 1,450 receiving yards, including a 24-catch performance, a single-game record, against Southern University.
As a senior, Rice surpassed himself in the record books with 112 receptions, 1,845 receiving yards and an astronomical 27 touchdown receptions.
After building up quite the reputation in college, the San Francisco 49ers traded up to select Rice with the 16th pick in the 1985 NFL Draft.
Rice’s skills translated well to the pro game as he caught 49 passes for 927 receiving yards in his rookie year.
But his historic career truly took off in 1986. In his second season, Rice caught 86 passes and led the league with 1,570 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns, helping Rice earn Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors for the first time in his career.
Rice’s career only got better from there. In the season following his breakout year, the 6-foot-2 pass catcher caught 22 touchdown passes, a single-season NFL record at the time (Randy Moss broke this tally with 23 touchdowns in 2007).
Over his 20-season career, Rice led the league in touchdown receptions six time and scored 10 or more touchdowns in nine of his first 11 years in the NFL. He led the league in receiving yards six times and surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in a season an immaculate 14 times.
Rice didn’t just perform in the regular season. His tandem with fellow Hall of Famer Joe Montana led the 49ers to three Super Bowl wins and Rice was named the MVP of the 1989 Super Bowl.
