Character: Courage

Helping to fulfill its mission to promote the values taught through playing the game of football, the Pro Football Hall of Fame opened an exhibit titled, simply, “Character.”Looking at the “Forgotten Four,” there might not be a better definition of COURAGE.

These men — Kenny Washington, Woody Strode, BILL WILLIS and MARION MOTLEY — reintegrated professional football in 1946, a year before Jackie Robinson did the same in Major League Baseball to much more fanfare.

They did this in a time when African-Americans had limited rights and opportunities in this country, especially in professional sports.

These men were courageous and paved the way for the stars of today’s game.
