Dave Robinson to Receive Red Smith Award

Gold Jacket Dave Robinson will be honored once again. The Green Bay Packers legend and former linebacker will receive the Red Smith Award on Jan. 19, 2016 during a banquet. The award is presented to a person who has excelled in sports from the state of Wisconsin.

The Red Smith Banquet was organized in 1965 as a not for profit organization for the purpose of raising funds to help support the Appleton Foxes minor league baseball team and other local youth sports organizations. To this day, all proceeds from the banquet continue to be distributed to local youth sports organizations, high school booster clubs, youth sports start-up programs, special project grants and team traveling grants.

Robinson joined the Green Bay Packers as the team’s first round pick out of Penn State in the 1963 NFL Draft. For the next ten seasons in Green Bay, he was a big-play performer from his linebacker spot as the Packers became one of the most dominant dynasties in NFL history. In all, he intercepted 27 passes which he returned for 449 yards and one touchdown. He helped the Packers bring home championships in Super Bowl I and II and was voted to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1960s.
