Former Florida State University Linebacker Derrick Brooks became a member of the elite college football fraternity during the annual National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame induction in New York City on Wednesday night.
“It was extremely humbling to represent the Seminoles in this capacity,” said Brooks in and exclusive interview with the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “It was very special to have coach Bowden and Mrs. Bowden there to see me inducted. For the first time I could honesty say my two former head coaches are now my teammates, coach Bowden a teammate in the College Football Hall of Fame and coach Dungy a fellow Gold Jacket.”
Brooks is the seventh College Football Hall of Fame inductee from Florida State and is among the greatest Seminoles in college football history.
He joins former Seminole players Ron Sellers, Ron Simmons, Charlie Ward and Gold Jackets Fred Biletnikoff and Deion Sanders in the College Football Hall of Fame.
Former FSU head coaches Bobby Bowden and Darrell Mudra have also received college football’s top honor.
Brooks lettered all four years at linebacker for the Seminoles and earned consensus All-American honors as a junior (1993) and senior (1994).  He led FSU to its first national championship as a junior with a win over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.
Along with being a superstar athlete on the field, Brooks also excelled in the classroom where he was a two-time Academic All-American and was later inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame.
“I loved the opportunity to learn,” said Brooks. “I’ve been God given blessed with a certain talent when it came to academics. I’ve turn that into a love that burns me today in educating kids.”
In addition to his jersey number being retired at both Florida State and in Tampa Bay, in 2014 he was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Brook’s legacy will carry on at Florida State when his son DeCalon, who committed on a full football scholarship, begins his college career in the fall of 2017.
