Did you know?

The Bucs owned the first overall pick in their first three drafts after joining the NFL as an expansion team in 1976. The Bucs selected future Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon the first year, then drafted Southern Cal running back Ricky Bell one year later. In 1978, Tampa Bay dealt the coveted pick to the Houston Oilers. In return, the Bucs received tight end Jimmie Giles, the Oilers first- and second- round picks (that turned into QB Doug Williams and G Brett Moritz) that year along with third- and fifth-round pick in '79 (DE Reggie Lewis and QB Chuck Fusina).

Bucs General Manager Rich McKay was ecstatic after working a couple of trades in 1995 to lay the foundation for their future defense. Tampa Bay traded with Philadelphia and moved down from the 7th spot to 12th overall and selected DT Warren Sapp. Then, the Bucs worked a deal with the Dallas Cowboys to acquire the 28th pick and drafted linebacker Derrick Brooks.

"On defense, we felt the first two picks with Sapp and Brooks - there just isn't going to be a lot of adjustment period," predicted McKay. "Derrick Brooks probably knew as much about the defense as defensive coordinators in the NFL.
"And Sapp... I don't have any question Mr. Sapp will be ready to go Day One."
