The Denver Broncos scored a victory for the American Football League as they became the first AFL team to beat a NFL team. The host Broncos downed the Detroit Lions, 13-7 for the historic victory.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Broncos took a 10-0 halftime lead on a 35-yard field goal by kicker Errol Mann and a one-yard TD run by fullback Cookie Gilchrist. The teams failed to score in the third quarter but the Lions struck with a TD pass midway through the final quarter. Mann closed out the Lions win with a 32-yard field goal with 2:11 remaining in the game.

Gilchrist was the game’s leading rusher with 89 yards on 13 carriers. Wide receiver Bill Malinchak led the Detroit attack with 113 yards on seven receptions and scored the Lions’ only touchdown.

As for Mann, he never made the Broncos regular season roster. He resurfaced the next season and had an 11-year NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and Oakland Raiders
