Saying that "God called me to Jackson State," Deion Sanders said Sunday he will be the 21st head coach in the history of the university’s football program.

Sanders made the announcement during the first episode of his new “21st and Prime” podcast.

He is stepping into a challenging situation.

Jackson State, an HBCU in Mississippi’s capital city, hasn't posted a winning season since 2013. The Tigers went 4-8 overall and 3-4 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference last season, finishing second-to-last in the SWAC’s East Division. The program has gone 23-44 overall since 2014.

Sanders will finish his coaching duties with Trinity Christian High School in Cedar Hill, Texas, this fall before he begins to prepare for the spring season at Jackson State. The SWAC postponed its 2020 season until next spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
