NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1990s

The National Football League's All-Decade Teams have been determined by the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee.

1920s1930s | 1940s  | 1950s | 1960s | 1970s  | 1980s | 1990s | 2000s

Once again, the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee was asked to come up with a Team of the Decade. This time around, it was clearly stated in the criteria that only a player’s performance during the 1990s could be taken into consideration. The team was announced in late July of 2000 as the NFL prepared for its upcoming 81st season.

Five players received unanimous selection with a vote from each of the Committee’s selectors. They were: guard Bruce Matthews, wide receiver Jerry Rice, running back Barry Sanders, and defensive ends Bruce Smith and Reggie White.

Two players were placed on the team at two different positions. Deion Sanders was named to the first-team at both cornerback and punt returner. Return specialist Mel Gray was voted to the second team at both punt returner and kickoff returner.

A total of eight players on the 1990s team were also selected to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1980s. The group included Rice, Smith, White, along with kickers Morten Andersen and Gary Anderson, punter Sean Landeta, tackle Gary Zimmerman, and safety Ronnie Lott.

Being from St. Louis and a big RAMS fan i recorded the PATRIOTS vs RAMS super bowl and have wacthed it numerous times in my opinion the PATS definetly cheated, their defence knew exactly what was coming the hole game, there is noway they could have beaten the "GREATEST SHOW ON TURF" and i am not just a soar loser either after all we had the CARDINALS for 25 years.

Brady without a single doubt. The problem with this debate so far is that stats are being thrown around like they mean something. Stats can be so misleading, who cares if you throw for 400yds if you also throw 2 picks at crucial moments. Favre has thrown for more yards than Brady I imagine, but would you really rate him as better? I think not. Winning games is essentially what counts, but more importantly winning the big, important, hard games in the most desperate of situations. How many times have I watched Manning choke in big games/big situations? Plenty. How many times have I watched Brady calmly and effortlessly conquer the same seemingly impossible odds? Even more than plenty. If I had to start a team from scratch Bray would win over Manning 100 times out of 100 tries. I do think Manning is a seriously great player and the way he runs his offense is amazing, but Brady may be the best ever. PS I've been watching NFL for 23 years and played football for 14 years and have been a head coach of a youth (16-20yrs) football team in England for 6 years(I'm English). Excellent debate too.

Ok i love both brady and manning but chris ur wrong peyton was in the nfl for 2 years when brady came in they would not of gone 18-0 if it were not for moss and they still lost pressure or not manning may have ye 1 superbowl rings and brady has 3 and ye thats good but they have an amazing defense and the colts rilly don't ( Bob sanders and Frenny) the pats had all of the top notch players and have always had the top notch players and u guys r wrong also who ever said it brady has won 105-99 games peyton was won 155-76 games so peyton is by far the best qb and brady has thrown what just over 30000 yards and manning has over 50000 yards to the stats favor manning by far and bradys qb rating is 90.3 and mannings is what 99.2 so they too favor manning manning so by far the best qb and is sure a best player of the decade srry but it's true

Tom Brady by far. Everyone wants to make comparisons about the players brady HAS and not HAD. Until 2007 brady never had top tier players like peyton had(Wayne, Harrison, James). Brady had players like Givens, Patten, J.R redman, Brown, smith to win his 3 rings. Plus peyton was a #1 pick so he was expected to win and do good. Brady meanwhile was a 6th rnd 199 overall pick. Stat wise peyton has better stats. BUT he also has 4 more years in the league brady does. Look @ bradys playoff record (14-4) compared to mannings(9-8). Bradys overall stats (225TD-99INT/30,844PYDS/3 SB RINGS 8 YRS) compared to mannings (366TD-181INT/50,128 PYDS/ 1 RING 12 YRS). Take the avg of 4 years and add those stats and brady is only 40TDs and 4K yds behind manning. Add the year he missed because of injury and brady is only 15TD behind manning. So you tell me how peyton manning is a better QB than Tom Brady????

See the thing is, people want to say how the colts defense stepped up in the super bowl against the bears and this year against the ravens and jets. what you biased colt fans dont want to realize is this: All 3 of those games were played against 1 dimensional teams. the bears, ravens, and jets are all known for their defense and running game. they dont have a quality passing game. So if you shut down the run, what do you have to worry about?? Nothing. dont give the colts so much credit when they arent deserving of it. Now they will be playing a team that can run AND throw the ball with precision. And has a good defense. Remember the patriots were favorites also.....we all know what happened to them too.

I dont understand how Troy Aikman, Charles Haley, Darren Woodson, and Coach Jimmy Johnson are not on your list of the 1990's All Decade Team. A quarterback with 90 wins, a sack master terror, defensive safety stalworth and a two time Super Bowl winning coach. Vanhammer

The thing about tom brady was that his defense had always stepped up in the playoffs and i never saw tom brady kick the field goal that won him or got him to the superbowl. i believe that adam vinateri was in both brady's and manning's superbowl victories if brady had mike vanderjact the guy was good only when it didn't count we wouldn't be having this conversation of who's better. peyton manning is better without question its unfortunate that his playoff's hav been bad cause he always had a bad defense but the year he won the defense stepped up and this year the defense has also steppd up but let's wait till after the superbowl to see what people say bout who's brady or peyton

You know as a football fan, you get sick of hearing these biased comments about the patriots and the infamous "tuck rule" game against the raiders. Brady didnt make the rule. Keyword being "RULE". If any of you halfwits or jets fans would know anything about anything, remember December 2, 2001? A game between the Jets and Patriots? Hmmm. A game in which the jets fumbled the ball but got it back because of what rule??? The TUCK RULE. You dont hear a single comment or word about that game even thought thats where it first happened. But all you hear is about the how the patriots cheated against the raiders. You know what? Get over it. Next time you think about bringing up the tuck rule, make sure to comment about dec 2, 2001 first.

You have to go with results, therefore Brady is the hand's down choice. Peyton has always had the better weapons on offense until Moss and Welker arrived, and I'll point out that 0 of Brady's three rings came with these guys as options. Brady turned Deion Branch into a superbowl MVP, how are his numbers post Brady? Peyton has alays has a superior running back(Edge and a hall of fame WR beside him (Harrison and Wayne, not to mention Dallas Clark). Welker accomplished very little with the Dolphins and Randy"s carreer was all but finished, now they are both top tier WR's. Brady all the way!!!

I would go with Peyton over Brady, Look at Peyton's overall No#'s compared to Brady's , he is way outdistanced him in stats and he never had the teams Brady has had, it's been all because of Peyton's carrying of that team, without Peyton the Colts are nothing, and as for Pats, they had a good enough team to survive without Brady, Example: Cassell just stepped in and kept the Pats as winners due to good all around team, Peyton could not go down and Colts do that! that shows to me Peyton is the better player, because what he has done for his team, and besides all the experts picked the Pats to get back to Superbowl since Brady came back this yr. well guess who's going and who's not? Peyton is the man ! especially when he alone beat the Pats earlier this yr the way he did ! there's your proof !

I would have to go with Peyton Manning, he is by far the best QB in the league and has been for some time now. Tom Brady and fellow Patriot players obviously can not win a game without cheating. Truthfully when they were caught that year they should have had to give up every win for the season and think about what they did. Peyton and the Colts are top notch.

With a perfect regular season, Three Super Bowl Rings, Tom Brady. I named him the NFL player of the decade on my websight. Well deserving. Payton Manning is great but only one ring. Tom Brady wasn't a number one draft choice, like Payton, so you would expect that from a number one draft choice, Brady showed you don't need to be a number one draft choice to be a winner. jason reese www.jasonreesemedia.com

There is no quit in the man. He will do everything he can to win!! Had did Tom perform when he lost just Wes welker? Peyton lost Marvin Harrison and anthony Gonzalez and with a pair of rookies makes it to the Super Bowl, again. Peyton is the only logical choice.

Peyton Manning is the better choice, but being Christian has nothing to do with it. He is an athlete and not running for pope! Manning is not only a fine player, he is continuously doing his homework. Unlike Brady, he is low key and appears to eschew glamor in favor of winning games. Brady, in contrast, appears to feel he is entitled to all manner of honors. His performance this year has been less than sterling, whereas Manning is consistent. That said, I would also like to see Drew Brees considered as well.

Tom Brady all the way. Manning gets to play in a covered dome, wind, snow, rain, is not a factor; of course this helps him appear to be the better QB! We already saw how teams that are "protected" from the elements do when forced to play in them....Loss, Loss, Loss. Bring the Superbowl to an outside stadium, in the middle of the winter, and when one of the inside, or "Good Christian" (whatever that means) teams/QBs wins, against someone that plays outside all the time, the way football was meant to be played, maybe then, and only then, will I ever look upon them in a different light. Go Saints!

Tom Brady? Really? Team of the decade and Tom brady is even a consideration. I can throw a ball in the air near moss and let I'm come down with it just as easy. Hes become a pathetic excuse for a football player. He wants a penalty every time he is touched and finds an excuse to stay out of the pro bowl everytime we let him in. Brett Favre finds any reason he can to play football, brady does everything he can not to. Peyton is a master mind and the best QB of his time.

I think that counts for a one up on Mr. Manning. They are both accomplished QB's they both desevre to be in the hall of fame. But considering the decade year for year and the accomplishments of both teams I say the NE Patriots take top spot.
