The Ravens won its first road victory in franchise history when kicker Matt Stover connected on a 37-yard field goal with 34 seconds left in the game at Giants Stadium. Both clubs scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half but Baltimore’s Rob Burnett blocked an extra point and the Giants missed on a two-point conversion to give the Ravens a slim lead at halftime.
Baltimore’s QB Vinny Testaverde led his team’s offense by converting 22 of 35 for 223 yards and 2 TDs including three completions on the game-winning drive. Linebacker Ray Lewis made a crucial tackle stopping Giants RB Tiki Barber on a 3rd-and-one followed by a missed field goal by Brad Daluiso with 2:59 remaining in the game.

Hall of Fame Perspective
Ozzie Newsome, Class of 1999
While the Ravens don’t yet have a player enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the team does have a Hall of Famer running the team. Ozzie Newsome is the club’s General Manager & Executive Vice President. In 2002, he made history when the Ravens promoted him thereby making him the NFL’s first black general manager.
Newsome’s road to the Hall of Fame was paved by his stellar career as a tight end for the Cleveland Browns. He was Cleveland’s first round draft pick in 1978 and instantly became a team leader. Newsome played 13 seasons with the Browns and caught 662 passes including a career-high 89 receptions in back-to-back seasons (1983-84).
Although the Ravens were not around when Newsome played, “The Wizard of Oz” did enjoy playing against Baltimore (the Colts) during his career. Newsome had both his longest reception and his longest TD catch in games against Baltimore. On Sept. 16, 1979, he had a 74-yard catch versus the Colts and burned Baltimore with a career-high 66-yard TD reception on Nov. 27, 1983.

The Ravens first head coach was Ted Marchibroda. He was no stranger to the city of Baltimore. He had previously served as the Baltimore Colts head coach from 1975-79. Under his tutelage, the Colts claimed three straight AFC Eastern Division titles. Marchibroda later served a second stint with the Colts in Indianapolis from 1992-95. Today, he serves as the radio analyst for the Colts.

On Dec. 7, 1941, the New York Giants were honoring future Hall of Famer Tuffy Leemans when news came that Pearl Harbor had been attacked. The stadium P.A. announcers across NFL stadiums made announcements asking servicemen to report to their units.

Since joining the NFL in 1996, the Ravens have always had a reputation of fielding great defensive units. Helping to fuel that thought is the play of Ravens cornerback Ed Reed. In 2004, he won the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year honors after recording one of the finest seasons ever by a defensive back. His 358 interception yards remain an all-time league high.

Giants back Gene “Choo Choo” Roberts was the first player in Giants history to rush for 200 yards in a game. He ran for 218 yards on 26 carries against the Chicago Cardinals on Nov. 12, 1950 to set the NFL single-game rushing record, a mark that was broken six years later by Los Angeles Rams rookie Tom Wilson.
Roberts hung onto to the team record until Tiki Barber rushed for 220 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs on Dec. 17, 2005. Barber broke his own record and today holds the team mark with 234 yards rushing. Roberts and Barber (five times) are two of three runners in Giants history to hit the 200-yard plateau. Joe Morris gained 202 yards in a game in 1985.
Interestingly, Roberts made history in 1949 when he became the first running back in history to have 200 receiving yards in a game. Three weeks later he accomplished the feat a second time. Today, he remains the only running back in NFL history ever to have two 200-yard receiving games.
Roberts left the Giants and the NFL following the ’50 season and finished his career in the Canadian Football League.
