Three running backs set club records for single-season rushing totals in 2008. The group included Adrian Peterson who became the first Minnesota Vikings running back ever to win a National Football League rushing title. The second-year pro rushed for 1,760 yards to break the franchise mark held by Robert Smith.
Steve Slaton, who led all rookie runners in 2008, set the Houston Texans rushing record with 1,282 yards during his first pro season. The other team rushing mark to fall last season was the Carolina Panthers. DeAngelo Williams’ 1,515 yards surpassed the mark held by Stephen Davis (1,444 yards in 2003). Williams (see photo right) also set the Panthers record for touchdowns (20) that came via a franchise best 18 rushing TDs and a pair touchdown receptions in 2008.
Currently, the longest standing team season rushing record belongs to the Cleveland Browns. No Browns running back has gained more yards than the 1,863 yards racked up by Hall of Famer Jim Brown in 1963.
Here is a team-by-team look at season rushing record holders.
