Senior Nominees, 1972-2012

Bob St. Clair
The selection of a senior nominee, known as the old-timer candidate until 1990, was added to the process in 1972. With the exception of 1975 when no senior nominee was picked, here is a look at the year-by-year senior nominees.  Beginning in 2004, the inclusion of two senior nominees as finalists for election was added to the selection process.

Those elected are indicated in CAPS. Two players, Lou Creekmur and Henry Jordan, were selected as the senior nominee twice and both earned election the second time around.

In 1990, Bob St. Clair semi-seriously stated he didn't like being called an "old-timer."

Considering the fact that St. Clair is 6'9" and eats raw meat, it didn't take long for the Hall of Fame to start using the "politically correct" term "senior."

I cannot even fathom how Jerry Kramer was not in the hall of fame a long, long time ago. Without him the legendary Packer Sweep wouldn't have been possible nor the Packers making it to Super Bowl I. I mean seriously.... Key block in the Ice Bowl that allowed the game winning quarterback sneak ring a bell?

One of the surest tacklers ever to play the game was Eddie Meador of the Los Angeles Rams. For over a decade he patroled the Rams secondary as a free safety, nabbing 46 errant passes to go along with 22 fumble recoveries. A member of the 60's all-decade team, 6 Pro Bowls and a 5 time All Pro selection, why he isn't in the hall yet is a mystery. If that wasn't enough, consider that he also was the holder on special teams, scored 7 TDs and even threw for a score. He quietly did his job as efficiently as any safety of his era, two of which are already in the hall.

Jerry Kramer was the lead pulling guard in the Packers Power Sweep-easily the most play in the 1960's. Jerry Kramer kicked all the field goals in the 1962 NFL Championship, even though he was a guard! Jerry Kramer made the key block in the 1967 NFL Championship ICE BOWL. Jerry has 5 NFL Championships and proved he is a WINNER! Jerry's best selling books about his career- INSTANT REPLAY and DISTANT REPLAY helped younger generations understand the NFL and profootball like no other books. Jerry almost died during his playing career and had so many surgeries, his nickname was ZIPPER! There was only 1 true NFL DYNASTY and that was the 1960's GB PACKERS and Jerry Kramer was a founding block the dynasty was built on! Oh, did I mention Jerry Kramer carried the legendary coach Vince Lombardi off the field after Super Bowl 2, in the coaches last game for Packers as head coach- WINNERS!

Gentlemen, Jerry Kramer belongs in the Hall Of Fame. If the Hall entrance depends on achievement and excellence over the duration of an NFL career, there can be no criteria that keeps Mr Kramer out. As long a men play and study football, he will always be remembered as a key member of the Green Bay football Dynasty. It would be an cruel and sad act to leave him out or put him in posthumously. There is no quarrel here with Curly or Dave, but Dave will tell you in concert with this writing that the omission of GB Packers #64 - Jerry Kramer needs to be corrected. While Dave was important to the 'packs defense the power of the Lombardi running game was led by Kramer. I worked on the field with all of the above and I can guarantee you the value that Kramer gave to that T*E*A*M. Thanks, Jim Tunney

Dear Committee, We all know how Great the players were who donned the Black and Gold in the 70's were and the many who are much deserving to be included in the Hall of Fame. Those players helped define a decade. However, if you induct the Steelers of the 70's and omit their main competition that truly made them great than it's like putting Ali in the Boxing Hall of Fame and over-looking Joe Frazier! Ali was Great because with Joe Frazier he had 3 of the Greatest Battles in the History of Boxing. The same holds true for the Dallas Cowboys of the Seventies. Tom Landry put together one of the greatest Teams ever assembled in the seventies, yet by not including more of those players in the Hall it seems to negate that fact - 20 consecutive winning seasons (who else in the Hall besides Staubach, Dorsett, R.White, Hayes, Wright, Lilly and Refro played on those teams is the question)! No other Team has went to 5 Super Bowls in Less time (9 Years), which equals almost one SB every other year in that decade. This Team Includes Notable Deserving HOF Players: Chuck Howley - 5 time All-Pro & the Only player to receive the SB MVP on a losing Team w/stats equal to current Inductees. Drew Pearson - All-Decade Receiver known for Clutch Playoff Game-Winning Receptions (Minn/Atlanta) w/stats better than Swann's, Gifford's and slightly less than Don Hutson's, only because an '84 car accident shortened his career. Tony Hill - stats better than Pearson's who led the Cowboys to 3 Consecutive NFC Championships and teamed with Pearson & Dorsett to become 1st 2WR/RB set to gain over 1000 yds each in a single-season. Cliff Harris & Charlie Waters - Arguably the Best Safety Tantum in the History of the NFL All-Pro Harris (started in 5 SB) has been nominated for years for his accomplishments and Waters has NFL Record INT's in the post-season (almost a 30 year record). More of the Doomsday Defensive that defined a decade Jethro Pugh, Too Tall Jones, Harvey Martin (one-time Sack Leader & SB Co-MVP). As well, I am a Huge Fan of the NFL and feel that some other Dominant Players of the "Golden Era of Football (1970's) should be included: Raiders - Kenny Stabler & Cliff Branch Vikings - Chuck Foreman, Sammy White & Ahmad Rashad Cardinals - Jim Hart & Conrad Dobler These Players stand out to me from the seventies and that decade catapulted the NFL into the popularity that it now enjoys. Please Recognize these players and others of this great era if you truly want to represent the Best there was and the History of this Great Game.

I Petition a Drew Pearson Induction. He was a Receiver that dominated and defined the 1970's (named "Top 20 All-Time NFL Receiver", "NFL 70's All Decade Receiver", 1974, 76-77 "All-Pro", 2005 "NFL Alumni Career Achievement" Award winner, Cowboys Offensive Captain in 1977, 1978, 1982, 1983, SB XII Champion & SB X,XIII Appearance) - Plus in 1979 Pearson/Hill/Dorsett were the 1st WR/WR/RB to gain over 1000yds on the same team in NFL History! The Committee seems to forget his Career was shortened prematurely by a 1984 Car Accident and his numbers are better than other Deserving HOF receivers Lynn Swann and Frank Gifford. His Clutch receptions to Win Play-off Games are second to none and he was instrumental to Dallas appearing in 7 NFC Championships in his 11 Years with the Cowboys, Dallas never went to another NFC Championship after he was forced to retire...until long after with the Jerry Jones/Jimmy Johnson era!

Chuck Howley - 6 Pro Bowls; 5 first team All Pro selections; first defensive player to win Super Bowl MVP; more sacks, fumble recoveries, and as many interceptions as Derrick Brooks (the best recent 4-3 OLB) despite Brooks playing in a more pass happy era; the greatest LB in Dallas Cowboys history and one of the greatest 4-3 OLB in NFL history.

Jack Butler - Pittsburgh Steelers DB (1951-1959). 52 interceptions & 10 fumble recoveries in 103 games. Highest Forced Turnover % in HISTORY of the NFL (60.2%). Retired 2nd on all time career interceptions list. Followed playing career as Director of BLESTO Scouting Combine for 47 years. He should have gone in twice. This seems like a no-brainer. This injustice may be addressed and corrected.
