First Overall Pick in the NFL Draft:
Did you know?
So much for the adage that championships are won by defenses. The expansion Jaguars went the opposite route with building their new team as they placed a focus on offense.
On the day before their first draft, the Jags send a pair of picks, third- and fifth-rounders, to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for left-handed quarterback Mark Brunell. One day later, the team bolstered the offensive unit by selecting highly-touted tackle Tony Boselli second overall. With a pick obtained in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, the Jaguars added a bona fide starting running back by taking Tennessee's James Stewart with the 19th pick.
The formula worked. With Brunelli, Boselli, and Stewart leading the way, the expansion Jags advanced to the AFC championship game by just their second season.
"Man, I got a whole Pringles can on my shoulder."
Yes, Jacksonville's second-round pick had much more than a "chip on his shoulder." A disappointed Maurice Jones-Drew shared his thoughts after having to wait until the 28th pick of the second round in 2006 before a NFL team drafted him.
Although Coach Jack Del Rio stated that the team was happy with their current stable of running backs and wasn't pegging the UCLA runner as a starter, Jones-Drew had a different goal in mind.
"I want to be the best running back in the league next year."
Despite the fact he had just four starts in his first three seasons, Jones-Drew did manage to average 844 yards a year before having a breakout season in 2009 with 1,391 yards and 15 TDs. He added another 1,300-yard season last year. In all, he has averaged 4.6 yards per carry in the NFL and also has hauled in 235 career receptions over his five NFL seasons.
