Super Matchup

History Published on : 9/23/2004

Joe GibbsA not too common of occurrence will take place on Monday night when Bill Parcells leads his Dallas Cowboys into Washington to take on Joe Gibbs  and the Redskins. For the first time since the 1999 NFL season, a game will feature two coaches with multiple Super Bowl championships facing each other.

Bill Parcells A mere 39 head coaches have ever led their team to a Super Bowl appearance. Only 22 of those men have walked away with a win in the NFL's title game. Of those, just 12 hold the distinction of winning two or more Super Bowl championships as a head coach. That elite group consists of Gibbs, Parcells, Bill Belichick, Tom Flores, Jimmy Johnson,  Tom LandryVince LombardiChuck Noll, George Seifert, Mike Shanahan, Don Shula, and Bill Walsh.

Gibbs won three Super Bowl titles (XVII, XXII, and XXVI) with Washington that helped him earn election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1996. Parcells' Super Bowl crowns came in 1986 and 1990 when he served as the head coach of the New York Giants.

The game also marks the 17th time that Gibbs and Parcells have squared off. Parcells has a 10-6 edge in games versus Gibbs. Here are how the two have fared against other NFL coaches during their careers.
