Class of 2019 NFL Draft Spotlight: Ty Law

Cornerback Ty Law was a playmaker from the second he stepped on the field at the University of Michigan.

Arriving in Ann Arbor in 1992, Law became a defensive playmaker in his freshman season, recording 49 tackles and four pass breakups in his first year in maize and blue. For a bit of odd collegiate history — the Wolverines went undefeated in 1992 but finished the season 9-0-3 with three ties.

Law became a defensive nightmare for BIG 10 opponents in his sophomore season, leading the Wolverines with six interceptions and increasing his tackle total to 57. His second-year performances earned him a place on the All-BIG 10 Team, his first individual postseason accolade.

As a junior, Law was the most recognizable and imposing force on the Wolverine’s defense. While his turnover numbers took a dip in his third year, his impact on the field increased as Michigan’s only lock-down corner. Law led the secondary with 58 tackles and eight pass breakups while still picking off two passes.

His junior campaign earned him another spot on the All-BIG 10 Team as well as All-America honors.

Law broke up 19 passes during his career at Michigan, ranking third all-time for the program.

Following a three-year tenure where Law started 27 consecutive games for the Wolverines, he decided to take stab at the big leagues and declare for the 1995 NFL Draft.

1995 NFL Draft

Heading into the 1995 NFL Draft, Law was battling with Fort Valley State’s Tyrone Poole as the best secondary player in the class.

As fate had it, the two ended up being picked back-to-back. The Carolina Panthers selected Poole with the 22nd overall pick, and Law was selected by the New England Patriots with pick No. 23. Law went on to have an illustrious NFL career, winning three Super Bowls (2001, ’03, ’04) as a member of the Patriots.

Law is the fifth member of the 1995 NFL Draft class to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame — he joins Warren Sapp (selected 12th overall), Derrick Brooks (28th overall), Curtis Martin (74th overall) and Terrell Davis (196th overall).

Other prominent members of the 1997 NFL Draft include Tony Boselli, Steve McNair, Kerry Collins, Kordell Stewart and Antonio Freeman.
