NFL Final Regular Season Power Rankings: Playoff Picture Set
12/31/2019
The NFL regular season has come to a conclusion and the playoff picture is officially set heading into the Wild Card Round.
The Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs have locked up the top two seeds in the AFC, while the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers sit atop the NFC.
The regular season was full of its thrills and spills, but the playoffs will be a new beast for all twelve remaining teams.
Here are the final power rankings for the 2019 NFL regular season.
Final Regular Season Power Rankings
1. Baltimore Ravens (14-2)
Playoff Seeding: No.1 seed in AFC
Playoff Scenario: Face Lowest Winning Seed from AFC Wild Card Round in Divisional Round
The Ravens come into the NFL Playoffs as the hottest team in the league by a country mile.
The winners of their last 12, Baltimore holds the league’s longest winning streak thanks to the prolific play from MVP candidate Lamar Jackson.
In 15 regular season games, Jackson threw for 3,127 passing yards and rushed for a whopping 1,206, the most rushing yards for a quarterback in a single season.
The Ravens are playing terrific football and will be aided by a raucous crowd at home for their Divisional Round matchup in two weeks.
2. San Francisco 49ers (13-3)
Playoff Seeding: No.1 seed in NFC
Playoff Scenario: Face Lowest Winning Seed from NFC Wild Card Round in Divisional Round
Everything was on the line for the San Francisco 49ers heading into Week 17. With a date against the Seahawks in Seattle, the 49ers had the chance to either secure the NFC West and the No.1 seed in the conference with a win or fall all the way to the No.5 seed and play on the road next week with a loss.
The former happened, as San Francisco escaped Seattle with a 26-21 win and a bye for next week.
The 49ers have ridden an impressive defense all season long, but the play of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo picked up after the trade deadline acquisition of Emmanuel Sanders.
The road through the NFC now runs through the Bay area.
3. Green Bay Packers (13-3)
Playoff Seeding: No.2 seed in NFC
Playoff Scenario: Face Highest Winning Seed from NFC Wild Card Round in Divisional Round
The Packers may have pulled off one of the quietest 13-win seasons in recent memory.
While the 49ers and Seahawks tussled for top position in the NFC West and the Saints 13-win campaign was consistently highlighted with record-breaking performances from Drew Brees, the Packers quickly dug out their spot for the No.2 seed in the conference.
While the turnaround of the Packers in one season under head coach Matt LaFleur has been impressive, this is still Aaron Rodgers’ team come playoff time.
The 2-time MVP will be playing in the post season for the first time in three seasons.
4. Kansas City Chiefs (12-4)
Playoff Seeding: No.2 seed in AFC
Playoff Scenario: Face Highest Winning Seed from AFC Wild Card Round in Divisional Round
The Chiefs survived a slight mid-season lull while Patrick Mahomes was recovering from injury and did enough to propel themselves into the No.2 seed in the AFC.
Kansas City will host a Divisional Round matchup at Arrowhead Stadium in two weeks, with hopes of securing the two wins needed to get themselves to the Super Bowl after falling short in the AFC Championship last season.
5. New Orleans Saints (13-3)
Playoff Seeding: No.3 seed in NFC.
Playoff Scenario: Host Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wild Card Round
The fact that the 13-win Saints have to play in the Wild Card Round speaks more to the top-heavy nature of the NFC than any identifiable problem with New Orleans’ play this season.
Like the Chiefs, the Saints survived early season turmoil when Drew Brees missed several games after undergoing surgery on his throwing hand. Luckily, Teddy Bridgewater stepped in and went undefeated in Brees’ absence.
As the No.3 seed, a Wild Card win will send them to Green Bay in two weeks for a matchup with the Packers.
