Moving On Up: Head Coach Bill Belichick

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick made history last night during the prime-time matchup against the Houston Texans. His team defeated the Texans 27-0, giving Belichick his 226th regular season victory as a head coach. In doing so, he became the fourth coach in NFL history to reach 226 wins. He is now tied with Hall of Fame head coach Curly Lambeau for fourth place all-time in regular-season victories.

Belichick is part of an impressive list. The top 10 regular season victory list includes seven Hall of Fame coaches. Belichick is the only active coach on that list. Only Don Shula, George Halas and Tom Landry have more wins.

Most Regular Season Wins

*Indicates Hall of Famers

  1. *Don Shula – 328
  2. *George Halas – 318
  3. *Tom Landry – 250
  4. Bill Belichick – 226
  5. *Curley Lambeau – 226
  6. Marty Schotteaheimer – 200
  7. *Chuck Noll – 193
  8. *Dan Reeves – 190
  9. Chuck Knox – 186
  10. *Bill Parcells - 172

Out of all the coaches to reach 226 victories, Shula did so the fastest in 314 games. It took Halas 335 games, Belichick 339 games, Landry 359 games and Lambeau 379 games.

Shula won his 226th game during the 1984 season (12-9-1984) when the Miami Dolphins defeated the Indianapolis Colts 35-17.

Halas won his 226th game during the 1953 season (11-15-1953) when the Chicago Bears defeated the Washington Redskins 27-24.

Landry won his 226th game during the 1985 season (09-29-1985) when the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Houston Oilers 17-10.

Lambeau won his 226th game during the 1953 season (12-06-1953) when the Washington Redskins defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 10-0.

Belichick has an advantage with his record, playing in a 16-game regular season. The other coaches played in a 14 or less regular-game season at some point in their career.

Belichick has only coached one Hall of Famer, Junior Seau (Class of 2015), many of his players will be eligible in the future, including players like Tom Brady and Randy Moss. Ty Law, who played for Belichick, has been eligible and has made the semifinalist list the past two years and has a good chance to make the cut-down this year.

Here are the Hall of Fame coaches who have coached Hall of Fame players throughout their tenure.
