In 2001,
Morten Andersen joined an elite group that includes Gary Anderson and
the legendary George Blanda. The trio holds the distinction of being the
only players in history to record more than 2,000 points in a career.
Andersen, who joined the New York Giants this past season after 13 years
with the New Orleans Saints and six with the Atlanta Falcons, eclipsed
the 2,000-point plateau in Week 11 to move into second place all-time
among the Top 20 scoring leaders. On the season, he kicked 23 field goals
and 29 extra points for 98 points. Anderson
of the Minnesota Vikings added 74 points (29 PATs, 15 FGs) to his career-leading
total. He has amassed 705 extra points and 476 field goals for 2,133 points
during his 20 seasons in the NFL. One other
active place-kicker, Steve Christie of the San Diego Chargers, ranked
among the Top 20 scoring leaders. Although John Carney of the New Orleans
Saints displaced him from the Top 20 in Week 12, Christie signed with
the Chargers the following week and was able to reclaim his spot in the
Top 20 by Week 16. His career totals include 281 field goals and 364 point-after-touchdowns
for 1,207 points. Leading Lifetime Scorers (At the Start of 2002 Season)
