Here are recaps of several games over the years between the Chargers and Raiders.

Cotton Davidson

September 30, 1962 – San Diego 42, OAKLAND 33
Chargers’ QB John Hadl threw for 161 yards and 3 TDs in the first half while Keith Lincoln rushed for 166 yards on the day that included an 86-yard touchdown run. Oakland’s Fred Williamson returned an interception 91 yards for a TD.

October 27, 1963 – Oakland 34, SAN DIEGO 33
Cotton Davidson came on in relief of Tom Flores at quarterback and led the Raiders to a win by throwing 3 TDs. The Raiders also were helped by Clem Daniels who gained 129 yards on 19 carries. Keith Lincoln rushed 15 times for 133 yards for San Diego.

October 25, 1979 – OAKLAND 45, San Diego 22
Ira Matthews scored on a club record 104-yard kickoff return and running back Booker Russell scored three one-yard TDds to spark Oakland to a win. Dan Fouts passed for 303 yards to become the first QB in history to have four straight 300-yard games.

January 11, 1981 (1980 AFC Championship Game) – Oakland 34, SAN DIEGO 27
The Raiders built a 28-7 first half lead and hung on to earn a Super Bowl berth. The Raiders Raymond Chester caught 5 passes for 102 yards and scored the game’s first touchdown on a 65-yard pass from quarterback Jim Plunkett. The Chargers comeback was led by Dan Fouts who passed for 336 yards and Charlie Joiner who had 130 yards receiving and two TDs.

November 10, 1985 – SAN DIEGO 40, Los Angeles 34 (OT)
Lionel James contributed 345 combined yards (51 rushing, 168 receiving, and 126 on kickoff returns) and scored the game-winner on a 17-yard run in overtime. Dan Fouts had his record sixth 400-yard passing game of his career. Marcus Allen led the Raiders attack by rushing for 119 yards and 1 TD.

September 22, 1996 – San Diego 40, OAKLAND 34
San Diego built a 21-0 first quarter lead when QB Stan Humphries threw 3 TDs in a span of 3 minutes, 5 seconds. The Chargers Tony Martin had 138 yards on 10 receptions and 3 TDs. The Raiders were led by Tim Brown who had 120 yards on 11 catches and scored 2 TDs.

Wellington Mara, 1916-2005

Hall of Famer Wellington Mara passed away on Oct. 25, at the age of 89. A member of the Class of 1997, Mara's contribution to pro football spanned eight decades.
