HIDDEN TREASURES

The Pro Football Hall of Fame's archives is home to the vast majority of the museum’s collection with approximately 90 percent of the mementos housed in this area.

"The archives is actually the ideal place for these items from a preservation aspect," commented Jason Aikens, the Hall’s collections curator. "In reality, the best thing for our mementos is for them not to see the light of day. But, nobody learns anything from them unless we share them with the public."

ITEM: Morrill's Victor Special nose guard ACQUIRED: 1982 DESCRIPTION: Rubber nose guard, circa 1905, worn by Harry Mason DONATED BY: Julian Mason Harry Mason, a star fullback for the Watertown (NY) Red & Blacks used this nose guard during his pro football career. In 1902, after Watertown declined an invitation to an indoor tournament at Madison Square Garden, Mason joined the Syracuse All-Stars and played in the tournament which was called the World Series. It was the first indoor game in pro football history. Mason’s complete uniform from that game is on exhibit in the Hall’s exhibit rotunda that chronicles professional football’s first century.
