Rice to receive HOF ring Monday night

Wide receiver Jerry Rice was formally enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in early August. Canton's Fawcett Stadium was packed with San Francisco 49ers fans who traveled across the country to pay tribute to the game's all-time leading receiver.

{GALLERY}Forty-Niners fans won't have to go so far on Monday to again pay homage to Rice. That's because he'll be at midfield of Candlestick Park for a special ring ceremony that night. Rice will receive his Hall of Fame ring from Steve Perry, Pro Football Hall of Fame President/Executive Director during a presentation that will take place prior to kickoff of the 49ers game against the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints.

The ring is one of three iconic symbols of Rice's election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The other two symbols are the gold Hall of Fame jacket and his bronze bust. Rice got his gold jacket at the annual Enshrinees Dinner held in Canton on the eve of his enshrinement. His bronze bust was unveiled at the Enshrinement ceremony held on August 7.

The three symbols will be on display during Monday night's ceremony. Rice will take the field in his gold jacket while his bronze bust will be shown off during the presentation. It marks a rare time that a bust is showcased outside of the Hall of Fame in Canton.

Rice is one of just 229 players to be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The total honor roll, including coaches and contributors, stands at 260.

There are 13 long-time members of the 49ers who've been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Preceding Rice were Fred Dean (2008), Jimmy Johnson (1994), Ronnie Lott (2000), Hugh McElhenny (1970), Joe Montana (2000), Leo Nomellini (1969), Joe Perry (1969), Bob St. Clair (1990), Y. A. Tittle (1971), Bill Walsh (1993), Dave Wilcox (2000), and Steve Young (2005). Five other Pro Football Hall of Fame members spent a brief portion of their career in 49ers uniforms. They include: Bob Hayes, Rickey Jackson, John Henry Johnson, O.J. Simpson, and Rod Woodson.

The team will also honor Rice by inducting him into the 49ers Hall of Fame on Saturday night and his #80 will be retired during halftime of the 49ers-Saints game. More from sf49ers.com>>>
