Did you know?

Studying the Redskins draft history in the 1970s is a quick read. The George Allen philosophy of building a team filled with veteran players resulted in Washington trading away each and every first-round draft pick in the decade. In fact, after the 1971 NFL Draft, the earliest the Redskins ended up on the clock in any draft through the entire '70s was the fourth round!

Quotable:

"There might be some real surprises. We certainly are considering players whose names aren't that well known," shared Redskins coach Jack Pardee the day before the 1980 NFL Draft. Washington fans were waiting with excitement as the team was preparing to pick its first NFL first-round draft pick in 12 years.

Scouting reports and even GM Bobby Bethard acknowledged that the team's top priorities were a defensive lineman and running back. But, Bethard and Pardee were also evaluating potential trades that would enable them to go after a high-profile receiver such as Lam Jones or Art Monk.

As it turned out, Monk was still available when it was the Redskins turn to pick at the No. 18 spot.

"We thought he would be gone. It took us 10 seconds to take him," commented a pleased Bethard.
