The kicking shoe worn by the Oakland Raiders’ Sebastian Janikowski on his record-tying 63-yard field goal is the most recent acquisition by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Janikowski topped off Kickoff Weekend in 2011 with a booming 63-yard field goal in the Raiders’ win over the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football.
The field goal came on the last play of the first half to put the Raiders in front 16-3. His 63-yarder was the third in NFL history. The record was originally set by Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints in 1970 and tied in 1998 by the Broncos’ Jason Elam. Janikowski’s shoe will be placed on exhibit in the Pro Football Today Gallery not far from where Elam’s shoe and ball he kicked on his 63-yard field goal is located. Dempsey’s kicking shoe is on display in the Hall’s Exhibition Rotunda.
Interestingly, Janikowski nailed a 70-yarder with distance to spare in pre-game warm-ups that night.
