{GALLERY}Pro Football Hall of Fame member Jonathan Ogden was honored as a “Hometown Hall of Famer™” by Allstate Insurance and the Pro Football Hall of Fame during a special ceremony at St. Albans School in Washington, D.C. on Friday, Sept. 20. The school declared it “Jonathan Ogden Day” on campus, as the students all wore matching purple Jonathan Ogden T-shirts and excitedly welcomed their hometown legend back to his alma mater.
St. Albans Headmaster Vance Wilson kicked off the ceremony by greeting attendees and providing background on Ogden’s success in football, track and academics. He then played a highlight video that showed Ogden’s illustrious career.
Skip Grant, legendary athletic director at St. Albans School, presented Ogden with his special plaque. Known throughout the St. Albans community for his inspirational speeches, Grant recounted his time watching Ogden grow up and succeed in athletics. He referred to the 16-year-old Ogden as a “man-child” for his exceptional size in comparison to his peers.
Following Grant’s speech, Ogden made his entrance through the back of the room, shaking hands with members of the St. Albans football team, which formed a tunnel around him. After the unveiling of the plaque, Ogden discussed his time at St. Albans and thanked the teachers and coaches who impacted his life. He then answered several questions from students in the audience.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the school retired Ogden’s No. 75 jersey.
Additional speakers at the ceremony included Pro Football Hall of Fame President and CEO George Veras and local Allstate agency owner Owen Landis Jr.
“Allstate is proud to partner with the Pro Football Hall of Fame to honor the hometown legacy of one of pro football’s legends, Jonathan Ogden, through the “Hometown Hall of Famer™” program,” said Landis.
Notable attendees included Ogden’s mother, Cassandra Ogden; Baltimore Ravens President, Dick Cass; as well as Ogden’s former coaches, teammates and friends.
In addition to the plaque, a commemorative Jonathan Ogden “Hometown Hall of Famers™” road sign will be on display in Washington, D.C.
An Outland Trophy Award-winning tackle from UCLA, Ogden was the first-ever first-round draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens in the 1996 NFL Draft. The consensus All-Rookie pick helped the Ravens climb to the top of the NFL during his 12 seasons in Baltimore. A great pass protector and run blocker, Ogden helped lead the Ravens to their first-ever Super Bowl in 2000, when they beat the New York Giants in a 34-7 victory in Super Bowl XXXV.
Ogden was named the NFL’s Offensive Lineman of the Year by the NFL Alumni in 2002. He received first-team All-Pro honors six times and All-AFC honors nine times, and was a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 2000s. Ogden was inducted into the Baltimore Ravens Ring of Honor in 2008 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2012.
In 2013, Ogden became the first longtime member of the Ravens franchise to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
