Gold Jacket Jim Langer Scout Report on Carson Wentz

Gold Jacket Jim Langer enjoyed attending games at South Dakota State last fall to watch his grandson Cole, a defensive tackle, play for the Jackrabbits. Langer followed the team and his grandson very closely, but he also kept his eye on another player that happened to play for the team’s historic rival, North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz.

Langer said that Wentz, projected to go among the top picks of Thursday’s NFL Draft, is one of the best quarterbacks he’s seen in a long time.

“He’s a leader, he understands the game, he sees the field. I’m very impressed with this kid,” described Langer.

The Miami Dolphins Hall of Fame center explained that it’s tough to gauge how any prospect will perform in the NFL until they get there. But looking back at Wentz’s collegiate career, Langer considers him to be a pure winner.

“If you look at how he’s performed against very tough competition – he never really goes out and lays an egg,” said Langer. “He’s very consistent and I think he’s very mature for his age. I can see him doing very very well at the next level. I’d be shocked if he doesn’t.”

Langer can’t speak for the Los Angeles Rams who currently have the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, but if the team’s looking for a quarterback Wentz would be a smart decision according to the Hall of Famer.

“Just from my observation as a former player watching this kid on the field - If I needed a quarterback and wanted to look at a player that might be the guy that they now call ‘The Franchise Quarterback,’ this kid has as good of a shot as any I’ve seen come down the pike in a long time,” shared Langer
