Roger Staubach Returns To Navy For Homecoming

Hall of Famer and Dallas Cowboys legend Roger Staubach returned to his former alma mater Navy to enjoy the homecoming festivities.
 
"We are thrilled and honored to have one of our finest return to Annapolis for this homecoming weekend. Having Roger Staubach attend the game against the University of Memphis will surely be an inspiration to our team and the entire brigade of midshipmen. Roger embodies what we are about here in Annapolis, graduating leaders of character who go on to serve in the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government," said Vice Admiral Ted Carter, 62nd Superintendent, United States Naval Academy.
 
In 1963, Staubach became the second Naval Academy football player in four years to win the Heisman Trophy.

Known as “Roger the Dodger,” he lead Navy to a ranking of second in the country and a berth in the Cotton Bowl as a junior, where he set Bowl records for pass completions (21-of-31) and yards passing (228). The Midshipmen posted wins over West Virginia, Michigan, Notre Dame and Maryland that season.
 
Staubach completed 106 passes in 161 attempts for 1,474 yards, while earning consensus All-America honors, as well as the Maxwell Trophy and Walter Camp Memorial Trophy.
 
Following his graduation, he spent a mandatory four years on active duty, including service in Vietnam, before he was able to turn his attention to pro football.
 
This season Navy has been on a tear. Beating Army 15 times in a row but destroying the No. 6 University of Houston playoff hopes during a stunning 46-40 victory, on Oct. 8. Navy midshipmen and fans stormed the field and celebrated the win. This was the first time Navy defeated a Top 10 team since 1984.
 
Yesterday's matchup was the first time University Memphis has made a trip to Annapolis to take on Navy to play in a football game. Navy defeated the Tigers by a score of 42-28 to take sole control over the West Division in the American Athletic Conference.
