HOF Son Receives Special Call
New England Patriots wide receiver Matthew Slater, son of Hall of Famer Jackie Slater, recently was named the 2017 Athletes in Action Bart Starr Award winner just like his father. The award was named after the Hall of Famer and is presented to a player who exemplifies character and leadership on and off the field.
Slater learned that he would be receiving the award in a very special way – from a phone call from Starr’s wife Cherry during the team’s Bible study. Watch his reaction and listen to the conversation below:

Other Hall of Famers who have received this award include Aeneas Williams, Reggie White, Steve Largent, Anthony Muñoz, Mike Singletary, Warren Moon, Cris Carter, Jackie Slater, Darrell Green, Bruce Matthews, Derrick Brooks, Curtis Martin. Also, a few Class of 2017 finalists have received the award including John Lynch, LaDainian Tomlinson and Kurt Warner.
