Baltimore Ravens Team Bonds During Trip to DC
While the rest of America was viewing the solar eclipse on Monday, Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh had a different plan in mind. Harbaugh suddenly canceled practice in an effort to spend some time building morale and camaraderie. He took his team to the Pentagon.
In a statement released by the team, Harbaugh went into specifics on the message he was trying to impart to his players:
“Football is a meritocracy, and our team has worked hard throughout this offseason and training camp. Our coaches appreciate and respect that effort. The team deserves a day away from the fields and meetings, and an opportunity to spend some time together away from the facility. Our good friend, General Ray Odierno [former head of the Joint Forces Command and chief of staff of the Army], stepped up to make this wonderful day happen, and we thank him. This is an amazing experience for all of us. After we tour the Pentagon, we are going to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and they will allow Keenan and Otha to participate in a ceremony.
“How fortunate and blessed are we to experience a day like this. It’s humbling, and we are so appreciative.”
The Ravens have been big supporters of the military, with Harbaugh leading by example in many cases. Harbaugh has been selected as the NFL’s Salute to Service recipient previously and has gone on USO tours overseas to support to troops directly.
In addition to the Pentagon, the team visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the gravesite of John F. Kennedy, both of which are at Arlington National Cemetery as well as had lunch at Fort Meyer.
Also this year, Ravens legendary linebacker Ray Lewis is eligible for the 2018 Class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The announcement of modern day nominees is expected mid-September.
