Tony Dungy Joins Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee
The Pro Football Hall of Fame Board of Trustees has approved Tony Dungy to fill an at-large vacancy on the Hall’s Selection Committee.
The first African American head coach to win a Super Bowl, Dungy was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016 following a 13-year coaching career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1996-2001) and the Indianapolis Colts (2002-08). Dungy posted an overall record of 148-79 as a head coach. He also served as a defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers (1984-88) and Minnesota Vikings (1992-95).
Dungy now serves as an NFL analyst for NBC Sports’ “Football Night in America.” He becomes the fourth member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame on the Selection Committee, joining Dan Fouts, James Lofton and Bill Polian.
“Coach Dungy is a tremendous addition to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee,” said Saleem Choudhry, the Hall’s Vice President of Museum & Exhibit Services who oversees the Selection Process at the Hall. “As a Hall of Fame coach who has been involved in the NFL since 1977, he has a depth of knowledge and experience with players, coaches and personnel from numerous organizations across multiple decades. His extensive understanding will be invaluable to the Selection Process.”
The Pro Football Hall of Fame's 48-person Selection Committee is charged with the vital task of continuing to ensure that new enshrinees are the finest the game has produced.
The Committee consists of one media representative from each pro football city — with two from New York and two from Los Angeles, as those cities each have two teams in the National Football League. There are 16 at-large Selectors, who are active members of the media or persons intricately involved in professional football, including one representative of the Pro Football Writers of America.
All appointments are open-ended and approved annually by a majority vote of the Hall of Fame's Board of Trustees. The Selection Committee meets annually on the Saturday before the Super Bowl to elect new members of the Hall of Fame.
Earlier this month, the Board of Trustees approved Polian and Lisa Salters as members of the Selection Committee.
Polian was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015 for his tremendous contributions to three franchises – Buffalo Bills (1984-1992), Carolina Panthers (1995-97) and Indianapolis Colts (1998-2011) – that resulted in a combined eight conference championship games and five Super Bowl appearances. He now serves as an NFL analyst for SiriusXM. Additionally, he served on the Blue-Ribbon Panel that elected the Centennial Class of 2020.
Salters serves as a sideline reporter for two of ESPN’s biggest platforms: “Monday Night Football” and NBA games on ESPN and ABC. She also co-hosts the award-winning “E:60” newsmagazine alongside Jeremy Schaap.
