Hall of Fame to Host United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon on June 2
The Pro Football Hall of Fame is hosting the United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon on Wednesday, June 2 for a public performance as a part of a “Military Appreciation Day” at the Hall.
The USMC Silent Drill Platoon is known for its unique precision drill exhibition requiring the high discipline and professionalism associated with every Marine. The Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon is made up of a 24-man rifle platoon wielding hand-polished, 10½-pound M1 Garand rifles with fixed bayonets. Their routine, completed without any verbal commands, concludes with a unique rifle inspection sequence demonstrating elaborate rifle spins and tosses. The platoon performs for visiting dignitaries in Washington, D.C., and in parades and ceremonies across the United States and around the world.
Marines of the Silent Drill Platoon are infantrymen hand selected from the Marching Companies to perform based on physical appearance and ceremonial drill acumen. Experienced Marines have the opportunity for selection as one of two Rifle Inspectors. These inspectors, along with the Platoon Drill Master, are entrusted with keeping and passing on the unique knowledge, history and traditions of the Silent Drill Platoon.
The USMC Silent Drill Platoon, based in Washington D.C., will perform at 2:30 p.m. June 2 on the Hall’s Field Turf, adjacent to the Museum. This performance is free and open to the public.
Additionally, the Marine Corps will bring their semi-truck featuring a Marine equipment display that includes an Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer for guests to check out.
