An All-America halfback at the University of Oregon, Renfro was drafted by the Cowboys in the second round of the 1964 NFL Draft.

Renfro was used as a kick returner as well as on defense early in his career with the Cowboys.

Mel returns a punt against the Giants. He led the NFL in punt return and kickoff return yardage as a rookie.

Renfro began his career at safety but switched to cornerback in his fifth season.
