Enshrinement Week Volunteer Committee Descriptions

VOLUNTEER COMMITTEE DESCRIPTIONS

The following is a brief description of the 30 volunteer committees that assist the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce with all the events surrounding the Enshrinement of the Class of 2017 into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  These descriptions will help you decide which committee matches with your interests, skills and abilities.

General Information

         To help you better understand the descriptions, these terms have the following meaning:

1.   “Gold Jacket.”  The term “Gold Jacket” refers to all of the 303 Pro Football Hall of Famers who have received a Gold Jacket.  Last year, over 130 Gold Jackets returned to Canton to participate in Enshrinement events.

2.   “Enshrinee” or “Enshrinement Class.” This refers to the seven men who were elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017.  They are Morten Andersen, Terrell Davis, Kenny Easley, Jerry Jones, Jason Taylor, LaDainian Tomlinson and Kurt Warner. 

3. “Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week Powered by Johnson Controls” refers to all of the events celebrating the enshrinement of the Class of 2017 from Thursday August 3 through Sunday August 6, highlighted by the Hall of Fame Game, Enshrinement Ceremony and the Concert for Legends.

4.   Event Locations:   The events associated with the enshrinement of the Class of 2017 are spread throughout Stark County.  For reference purposes, the locations are:

  • Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village: 2121 George Halas Drive, NW, Canton, Ohio 44708.  This includes the Pro Football Hall of Fame Museum, Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium and surrounding property making up the Pro Football Hall of Fame Campus.
  • Canton Memorial Civic Center:  1101 Market Avenue North, Canton, Ohio  44702.
  • Kent State University at Stark and Stark State College campuses:  Frank Avenue, Canton, Ohio  44720.  Can be accessed off Frank or Dressler Avenue.
  • Paul Brown Tiger Stadium: 1 Paul E Brown Drive SE, Massillon, Ohio, 44646.
  • First Play Route: Includes a 2.5-mile route from the former site of the Hupmobile auto showroom in downtown Canton (where the NFL was founded), through the Canton Parks to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
  • Community Parade:  Includes a one-mile route on Market Avenue, starting at 11th Street North and traveling south to 3rd Street.
  • Canton Repository Grand Parade Route.  Includes a 2.2-mile route on Cleveland Avenue, starting at the AEP building at 4th Street South and traveling north to 25th Street.

COMMITTEES

APPRECIATION PARTY

Assist with set-up, tear down, beverage, snack and ice cream stations, clear tables and trash, check tickets and IDs, and other hospitality duties, on July 21st.

Additional Requirements:  Must be at least 21 years of age.

AUTOGRAPH

Assist Fans and Gold Jackets during Autograph sessions on August 3rd and 5th.

Volunteers Needed:  38

Additional Requirements:  Requires outgoing personality who enjoys interaction with the public.  Must be able to stand during entire shift.

Location:  Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village


BALLOON CLASSIC & FIREWORKS

Strong emphasis on facilities and operations. Assist with vendors, entertainment, beverage service, and pilot hospitality on July 28th, 29th, and 30th.

Co-Chairmen:  Keith Bennett and Todd Hawke

Volunteers needed:  25

Additional Requirements:  Assist in event set-up and teardown as well as duties as assigned during the event.  Must be customer friendly, team-oriented and able-bodied.

Location: Kent State University at Stark and Stark State College campuses


UP, UP & AWAY 5K

New event on July 29th!  Assist with packet pick-up, start and finish-line duties, water stops, awards ceremony, beverage service, and on-course safety/security.

Additional Requirements:  People-friendly, able to stand for an extended period.

Location: Kent State University at Stark and Stark State College campuses


COMMUNICATIONS

Distribute radio equipment and monitor radio communications at various events, including EMS requests, and communications among various on-site committees.

Additional Requirements:  Must be able to volunteer at more than one event.  Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with other volunteers and the general public.

Location:  Various venues depending on events worked


COMMUNITY PARADE

Help check-in units, serve as parade route marshal, assist in staging or demarshaling areas on July 23rd.

Additional Requirements:  Requires outgoing personality who enjoys interaction with the public.  Must be able to stand in outside elements during entire shift.

Location:  Market Avenue between 11th Street North and 3rd Street South


CONCERT FOR LEGENDS

During Concert for Legends on August 6th,  greet fans, check floor tickets, affix wristbands and assist guests seated on the field.

Additional Requirements:  Requires outgoing personality who enjoys interaction with the public.  Must be able to stand in outside elements during entire shift.

CORPORATE HOST

Drive official HOF vehicles to transport VIP’s to all Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week Powered by Johnson Controls events, providing VIP treatment.  May include airport pick-up/drop-off.

Additional Requirements:  Must be at least 25 years old, have a valid Ohio Driver’s License and pass a background check. 

Must be knowledgeable with traffic routes and flow around the Hall of Fame and Canton.

Must be available from 8:00 am through midnight August 3rd through August 6th.

Location:  Throughout Stark County and Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village


DRUM CORPS INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

Assist with public parking, greet patrons and collect tickets, monitor handicapped seating, help with passenger services (golf cart transportation for patrons) on August 7th.

Additional Requirements:  Requires outgoing personality who enjoys interaction with the public.  Some must be able to stand in outside elements during entire shift.

ENSHRINEES’ GOLD JACKET DINNER

Hosts/hostesses to greet and direct patrons, assist with beverage placement at each place setting, help sell commemorative steins at conclusion of event, on August 4th.

ENSHRINEES’ ROUNDTABLE

Hosts/hostesses to greet and direct patrons, assist with beverage placement at each place setting, help sell commemorative “fotoballs” at conclusion of event, on August 6th.

ENSHRINEMENT CEREMONY

During Enshrinement Ceremony on August 5th, greet fans, check floor tickets, affix wristbands and assist guests seated on the field.  Maintain security around stage before, during and after ceremony.

FAN APPRECIATION TAILGATE PARTY

Assist guests attending Gold and Diamond Venue Parties August 3rd, 5th and 6th.  Includes checking tickets and affixing wristbands, bartending, distributing souvenirs and escorting guests to stadium after parties.

FASHION SHOW LUNCHEON

Hostesses to put programs, gift bags, etc. at each place setting, greet and direct patrons on August 4th.

FIRST PLAY/AMBASSADOR

Coordinate and assist in assembling up to 4000 children along 2.5-mile route to pass a football from downtown Canton through the Canton Park to the Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village on August 3rd.  Assist in feeding and clean up after event.  Assist in skills camp at Don Scott Field after event.  Escort Gold Jackets to community outreach programs on August 4th.

Additional Requirements:  Requires outgoing personality and patience for working with children.  Requires standing in outside elements during entire shift.

Location:  Route from downtown Canton through Canton Parks to Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village


FOOD

Work in collaboration with caterers and hostesses (as maître d’s or committee volunteers) to assure successful meal service for all guests at Fashion Show Luncheon and Enshrinees’ Gold Jacket Dinner on August 4th, and Enshrinees’ Roundtable on August 6th.

Additional Requirements: Requires outgoing personality and patience.  Must be very mobile and able to be on your feet for long periods of time.

THE CANTON REPOSITORY GRAND PARADE

Assist with parade seat set-up, assist in staging or demarshaling areas, serve as parade route marshal on August 5th.

Additional Requirements:  Requires outgoing personality and patience, ability to stand in outside elements during entire event.

Location:  Cleveland Avenue between 4th Street South and 25th Street North


GUEST SERVICES

Staff Visitor Information Tents August 3rd through August 6th.  Assist guests with questions and provide information about events at Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village and related events and general community information.  Provide golf cart transportation for handicapped guests.  Staff Welcome Booth at Akron Canton Airport

Additional Requirements:  Requires outgoing personality who enjoys interaction with the public.  Must be able to stand in outside tents during entire shift.

HOSPITALITY

Coordinate and deliver food and beverages to selected events at Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village August 3rd through August 6th.  Assist guests in Bronze Venue parties August 3rd, 5th and 6th.  Assist event planners for special events as needed.

Additional Requirements:  Requires outgoing personality who enjoys interaction with the public.  Must be able to stand in outside tents during entire shift.  Must be physically able to lift and carry cases of beverages.

HALL OF FAME GAME

Assist in production and staging of all pregame and halftime elements of Hall of Fame Game.

Additional Requirements:  Must be independent and punctual in following TV production script.

Location:  Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium


HALL OF FAME HOSTESS

Escort and assist Class of 2017 Enshrinees and Presenters for all events and duties while in Canton August 3rd through August 6th.  Provide assistance to all returning Gold Jackets and their families for all events while in Canton August 3rd through August 6th.  Provide assistance with seating for Families and Friends of Enshrinees and Presenters during Enshrinement Ceremony on August 5th.

Additional Requirements:  Requires a pleasant and outgoing personality and someone who can be very flexible to last minute changes.

HOTEL AMBASSADORS

Staff Hotel Information Table August 3rd through August 6th at area hotels where Enshrinees Friends and Families are staying.  Assist Friends and Families with information about the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week Powered by Johnson Controls events and general community information. Assist with times and locations of specific bus travel information for those events.  Act as host on bus transporting Enshrinee’s Family and Friends from their hotels to all events.

QUEEN

Serve as liaison/chaperone to Queen and Court at their community service projects and official Enshrinement Festival events.

Volunteers Needed:   15

Additional Requirements:  Availability throughout May, June and July to accompany Queen and Court to appearances as chaperones. Females only please; at least 25 years of age.

SECURITY

Provide crowd control and assist in flow of crowds for all events at Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village August 3rd through August 6th.  Provide security for Enshrinees and Gold Jackets at Holiday Inn.

Volunteers Needed:  150

Additional Requirements: Requires individuals with an outgoing personality who enjoys dealing with the public, but can be insistent and firm when necessary, always using good judgment.  Must be able to stand during entire shift, most assignments require working outside in the elements.

SECURITY & LOGISTICS

Provide crowd control/assist in flow of crowds at various indoor and outdoor events held July 23rd through August 7th.

Additional Requirements: Requires individuals with an outgoing personality who enjoy dealing with the public, but can be insistent and firm when necessary, always using good judgment.  Must be able to stand during entire shift, assignments could be indoor and/or outdoor.

SOUVENIRS

Sell commemorative, official souvenirs at a variety of indoor and outdoor events held July 23rd through August 7th.

Volunteers Needed:   40

Additional Requirements:  Requires individuals with an outgoing personality who enjoy dealing with the public (husband and wife teams are welcome). Must be able to stand during entire shift and lift boxes of merchandise; assignments could be indoor and/or outdoor.

SPECIAL SERVICES

Provides support to event committees in areas of hospitality, sponsor and guest check-in, registration at a variety of indoor and outdoor events held July 23rd through August 7th.

Additional Requirements:  Requires individuals with an outgoing personality who enjoy dealing with the public and can assist at multiple events.

STAGING

Assist in the set-up and tear down of the events at the Civic Center (Fashion Show Luncheon, Enshrinees’ Gold Jacket Dinner, and Enshrinees’ Roundtable) during the week of July 31st through August 6th.

Volunteers Needed:   25

Additional Requirements:  Requires multi-day commitment and able-bodied people who can work well with contractors/vendors.

TRANSPORTATION

Drive Enshrinement Class, Presenters, Gold Jackets and VIP’s in Official HOF cars to and from all Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week Powered by Johnson Controls events.  Assist the Hall of Fame staff in transportation needs throughout the weekend.

Additional Requirements:  All Transportation Committee members must be at least 25 years old, have a valid Ohio Driver’s License and pass a background check. Must be knowledgeable with traffic routes and flow around Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village and Canton.  Must be available from August 3rd through August 6th.


VOLUNTEER SUPPORT SERVICES

Assist Hall of Fame staff processing and distributing Committee Shirt orders, credentials, name badges and parking passes.  Supervise Volunteer Tent and assist in providing food and water to all volunteers at Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village.

Additional Requirements: Requires individuals who enjoy working behind the scenes and can be flexible to handle various tasks.  May be used as “floater volunteers” to supplement any other committee.
