Real men wear pink

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The National Football League has made an important statement to support the American Cancer Society during this month with their "A Crucial Catch" campaign. Last year the NFL raised more than a million dollars to donate to the cause. Pink has never looked so manly. You can see the support both on the field and on the sidelines – pink gloves, socks, hats, even referee whistles!

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the United States. Most people, in one way or another, will be affected by the disease at some point in their lifetime. NFL players are no exception. Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald lost his mother due to complications from treatment of breast cancer. All year long he raises awareness for the disease just like he is doing this month. Fitzgerald, according to his official Facebook page, is pledging $1,000 for every one of his catches and $10,000 for each of his touchdowns in October for breast cancer research. He also announced last Wednesday that he will donate 10 cents for every new person who follows him on Twitter (@LarryFitzgerald). In the first day, he received more than 30,000 new followers. That's pretty impressive for spreading the word. As far as fashion, Nike made special Super Speed cleats for Fitzgerald (see the photo below that he tweeted), which include laser etched details in a matching etched box. He didn't wear these one-of-a-kind shoes on the field, but did wear pink cleats.

Fans may purchase pink NFL gear to show their support as well! Fashion in this case brings us all together. It shows how much players, coaches and fans support this great cause. It doesn't matter which team you root for, whether you enjoy an NFL game from a luxury suite or end zone, or if you watch from home, we all come together to raise awareness for a disease that could affect anyone.

I'm proud to let you know that the Hall of Fame Store (here in Canton and online at store.profootballhof.com) has Breast Cancer Awareness apparel. And, for the month of October, we're giving away free, special edition Breast Cancer Awareness football cards with every order! Shop now>>>

As I'm sure you've seen advertised during games the past two weekends, the NFL is also auctioning game-worn pink gear to benefit the American Cancer Society at www.nfl.com/auction.

Just another way that Football and Fashion make a great team.
