49ers shutout streak continues

Jimmy Carter was president of the United States and Jim Plunkett was San Francisco's quarterback the last time the 49ers went an entire game without putting any points on the scoreboard.

Needless to say, the 49ers' incredible 403-game streak of scoring, that includes their 49-7 win over the Chicago Bears last week, is by far an NFL record.

The last time the 49ers failed to muster any points came on October 9, 1977 in a game at home against Atlanta. Late in the third quarter, the Falcons' Edgar Field blocked a San Francisco punt and it was recovered at the 49ers' 39-yard line. One play later, quarterback Scott Hunter threw a scoring pass to Alfred Jenkins who snagged the ball after it had been deflected by the Niners' Ralph McGill. Atlanta's defense recorded four sacks in leading the Falcons to a 7-0 shutout of San Francisco.

When the day comes that the streak is broken, the 49ers can only hope that they rebound better than the Raiders and Saints. Oakland followed up its 217-game streak by suffering three straight shutouts (Detroit, Denver, Kansas City). In 1997 the Saints were shutout, 13-0, by the Carolina Panthers to end a 216-game scoring streak.  One week later, New Orleans was held scoreless again as they fell to San Francisco, 23-0.
