Shelby Blues team photo
Charles Follis was the first African-American to play professional football although when he became pro is not fully substantiated. There is evidence he was paid starting in 1904 but there is no documentation of him being paid to play prior to that year. Here he is shown in this photograph of the 1902 Shelby Blues (second row right).
