Bobby Mitchell’s golf classic raised more than $630,000

A team led by Kansas City Chiefs’ Pro Football Hall of Famer Bobby Bell scored a 56 to finish first in the 20th Anniversary of the Bobby Mitchell/AutoTrader.com Hall of Fame Golf Classic. The annual charity golf outing was sponsored by Washington Area New Automobile Dealers Association and DARCARS.

Mitchell, a wide receiver and halfback in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins from 1958 to 1968, was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983. Today, he dedicates his work to the more than 912,000 Americans living with blood cancers, and particularly the young people who battle leukemia, which causes more deaths than any other cancer in children under the age of 20. Ryan Darby, age six, of Bethesda, Md., was honored throughout the weekend as the 2010 patient hero for his incredible strength and positive attitude while battling leukemia.

Mitchell’s popular tournament attracted a large number of Hall of Fame legends from football as well as basketball. Hall of Fame executives, including President/Executive Director Steve Perry, also participated in the outing that took place on July 11 at Lansdowne Resort in Lansdowne, VA.

The second and third place teams in the tournament were also led by members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A team anchored by longtime Redskins receiver Art Monk placed second while the third place team was led by San Francisco 49ers great Bob St. Clair.

Other members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame who played in Mitchell’s tournament included: Lem Barney, Elvin Bethea, Fred Dean, Joe DeLamielleure, Darrell Green, John Hannah, Ted Hendricks, Ken Houston, Sam Huff, Rickey Jackson, Charlie Joiner, Sonny Jurgensen, Leroy Kelly, Paul Krause, Willie Lanier, Floyd Little, Larry Little, Tom Mack, Gino Marchetti, Randall McDaniel, Tommy McDonald, Lenny Moore, Anthony Muñoz, John Randle, Mel Renfro, John Riggins, Charlie Sanders, Art Shell, Jan Stenerud, Dwight Stephenson, Charley Taylor, Paul Warfield, Roger Wehrli, Dave Wilcox, Kellen Winslow and Rayfield Wright. 

At the post-tournament awards banquet, Honorary Chairman and Redskins legend, Bobby Mitchell, announced that this year’s event raised more than $630,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. That brings the tournament’s total amount raised to more than $7 million over the past two decades.
