Project Isaiah Reaching Most Vulnerable in Detroit
This week, Project Isaiah launched a partnership with the city of Detroit to feed thousands of COVID-positive individuals who rely on public assistance for meals, a circumstance that makes it difficult for them to shelter in place.
Beginning April 29, and each Wednesday going forward, workers from the Detroit Health Department will deliver boxed meals from Gate Gourmet to these individuals.
Nearly 3,500 COVID-positive people received meals on the initial day. Brave workers – proudly wearing shirts and masks adorned with Project Isaiah and Pro Football Hall of Fame logos – made the deliveries.
This effort was designed to reduce transmission risk and to allow these individuals to shelter in place rather than visit neighborhood soup kitchens or other meal providers. Prior to Wednesday, no other option for meals existed for COVID-positive individuals with limited incomes who were ordered to shelter at home.
Earlier this month, the Pro Football Hall of Fame teamed up with a number of dedicated philanthropists and Gate Gourmet – a global leader in providing prepackaged food products for the airline industry – to create Project Isaiah, a nationwide effort to deliver meals to people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Project Isaiah is bringing more than 300,000 boxed meals per week to recipients at no cost to them. In a secondary benefit to the communities served, the project also has saved about 500 jobs.
Gate Gourmet employees deliver the boxed meals to partner agencies, such as food banks, shelters and youth organizations, in 11 major U.S. cities: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Each city also is home to at least one NFL franchise.
